Voting this winter? Here’s what we think on Prop. 33.
As Election Day approaches, it’s important for everyone who can vote to go vote! This year specifically, however, Californians are faced with a proposition that could deeply affect affordable housing if passed: Prop. 33.
Millions of California residents already struggle to find affordable housing and the passing of Prop. 33 could worsen our housing crisis. CHAC is committed to advocating for keeping affordable housing here for good, so here’s why you should vote NO on Prop. 33.
Prop. 33 regards the 1995 Costa-Hawkins Act that provides exemptions from rent control for specific properties like single-family homes and apartments, and also allows landlords to adjust rents to market rate between leases. Prop. 33 will essentially undo this act, allowing for rent control everywhere — this is bad for both landlords and tenants!
Prop. 33 may increase development costs, making affordable housing projects more expensive. As costs rise, fewer affordable housing units may be built or maintained, putting low-income families at risk of facing even more housing instability. They’ll be hit by cost increases and supply shortages as a result, making living in California even further out of reach.
By voting NO on Prop. 33, you’re supporting low-income communities and leaving more people with stable housing, protecting vulnerable communities. Your vote makes a difference.
